Webster University Nurtures the Future of Women's Chess
coverThe 11th Annual Susan Polgar Girls Invitational began on Thursday July 10 at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri USA. The event, which drew 56 participants from over 40 US States and 7 countries, consists of group training sessions with GM Polgar followed by a 6-round tournament with prizes including college scholarships to Webster University of over $200,000. Webster University graciously also provided full accommodations for the official qualifiers from each US State and country.

Webster University is home to the Susan Polgar Institute of Chess (SPICE) program who has secured for a second consecutive year the US National Collegiate championships (4 years for SPICE program via GM Polgar's previous university).

FIDE Vice President Ali Nihat Yazici spoke during the opening ceremony and praised the leadership of Webster University for fostering the development of women's chess and for helping sow the seeds for future generations of top talent female chess players.

Of the 56 girls that competed, 14 are FIDE rated of which 5 hold FIDE titles of Woman Candidate Master, Woman FIDE Master and Woman International Master.
